Sometimes opportunity comes our way, but more often then not opportunities are created. These opportunities are created by hard work, vision, and planning. These traits go a long way in making opportunities become reality.
All over the country states are struggling to cope with the effects of this recession. Some are implementing ingenious policies to weather the storm and move forward. We have a golden opportunity right now as Wisconsin has the chance to become the engine of economic growth that we all know is possible. I am determined to work with any and all other legislators, regardless of party, to set the agenda that will make Wisconsin the best state to live, work, and play.
To accomplish this, we must accentuate our positives:
• Our highly skilled and educated workforce
• The UW, private universities, K12 system, and technical colleges
• Top notch manufacturing and agricultural sectors
• Our great natural resources and sporting heritage
We need to make sure that we start taking steps forward, not backward, in achieving our common goal. We can be business friendly by creating incentives similar or better than other states. We can be resident friendly by controlling spending and holding the line on taxes. We can continue to enhance and promote our leading tourist destinations to create more jobs in Wisconsin.
I believe this can all be done while reigning in government. We must research what other states have been doing to help grow and diversify their economic portfolio and model after them. We must also create incentives that are unique and that only Wisconsin can offer. This can be done, and by doing so, we will be able to market Wisconsin to the rest of the country and to the world.
By working in a bi-partisan fashion, I have already begun this process to create the new Wisconsin that will emerge from this recession. I look forward to working with the new governor and fellow legislators to make this shared goal for Wisconsin a reality!
